What we think about SoundHound AI
SoundHound AI in Three Words: Next-Gen Conversational Intelligence
Background
SoundHound AI is an innovator in conversational intelligence, providing voice AI solutions for businesses to offer conversational experiences to their customers. Its stated mission is to voice-enable the world with conversational intelligence.
Just as Amazon's Alexa digital assistant could understand your questions and then respond with answers, large language models now serve as the foundation for a new field of conversational AI that is changing how we communicate with machines and with businesses.
Imagine if you could go into a Chipotle and order at a digital kiosk just using words; with no human cashier required. Or what if your Hyundai car could navigate your trip simply by you telling it where to go; without taking a finger off the wheel. Or how about if you turn on your VIZIO TV and tell it exactly what show to watch; without browsing through multiple channels or dashboards.
These are actual use cases that are already commercialized due to partnerships with SoundHound. Collectively, it offers fully-integrated solutions in 25 languages and has $1.2 billion of backlog already on the books.
SoundHound generates revenue primarily in three ways: royalties, subscriptions, and advertising.
If its conversational intelligence platform is embedded into a product like a Smart TV, it takes a royalty cut of sales. It recognized $4.4 million of product royalties revenue in the first quarter, which was 15% of total sales.
If its software is being continually used, it charges a monthly subscription fee. This is particularly true at the enterprise level, where its AI agent "Amelia" gets hired to fulfill customer service inquiries such as updating payment methods, booking trips, or processing insurance claims (perhaps one day for UnitedHealth, who is our other Watch List candidate this month).
The enterprise segment also includes revenues tied to developmental projects, where SoundHound leverages open-source LLMs like ChatGPT with its fine-tuned generative models and then blends in a customer's unique proprietary data to train the AI. In total, it recognized $24.5 million of service subscriptions revenue in the first quarter, which was 84% of total sales.
Lastly, SoundHound generates a bit of advertising revenue from its popular music identification app. It recognized $109 thousand of monetization advertising revenue in the first quarter, which was 1% of total sales.
SoundHound is independent, which is an advantage it enjoys over Big Tech companies who are trying to control their entire ecosystem. And rather than selling devices into the home, it's focusing primarily on restaurants and retailers; where commercial transactions are already taking place frequently and it can benefit from usage-based fees.
First quarter 2025 revenue increased a quite-impressive 151% to $29 million. The company is still reporting heavy losses, as it is spending aggressively on research & development ($25 million; 85% of revenue) and sales & marketing ($12 million; 41% of revenue). The idea is that SoundHound will become deeply-embedded with customers; where its transaction-based revenues with low operating costs will scale the business to profitability.
It is a good plan, though it will ultimately rely on execution. The early-adopters are on-board, and now it's time to go after some larger contracts.
With a triple-digit growth rate in an addressable market that it believes is worth $140 billion, SoundHound could soon become music to the ears for anyone looking to invest in the next wave of AI.
