What we think about Enovix (ENVX)
Enovix is at the forefront of revolutionizing the battery industry. The company designs and manufactures 3D silicon lithium-ion batteries, which offer significant advantages over conventional lithium-ion batteries. These include increased energy density, improved safety, and extended cycle life.
Enovix’s batteries are designed to meet the growing demands of high-energy applications such as electric vehicles, portable electronics, and renewable energy storage. Silicon can handle more lithium ions, which allows for an increase in battery capacity and rate of charge — basically making the battery much better in all the ways you’d want a battery to be better.
However, silicon also expands and gets heated when it is used and when it charges, so all previous technologies wanting to incorporate a silicon anode have crashed —and burned— in the world of the ambitiously theoretical.
Enovix solved the silicon problem by rearranging the architecture of their batteries so that instead of the battery components being rolled up, the components are lined up horizontally in stacks.
Yet that still doesn’t solve the heating issue, because you need resistors to calm things down. But resistors take up space, so Enovix created their patented and trademarked “BrakeFlow” technology which allows them to fit up to 100 micro-resistors in one slab, each connected to the individual battery components in a way that keeps the battery way cooler. They then secure the components within a cage that keeps the expansion in check.
And voila: a better that has approximately 10x the the specific theoretical capacity, which leads to a much higher energy density, and, crucially, is way safer than any lithium-ion battery on the market today.
