What we think about Target (TGT)

Target sells everything from apparel to electronics, groceries, toys, furniture, and basically anything you use inside a house. The company operates 1,909 stores after the close of the last quarter while also offering two-day delivery, same-day delivery through the Shipt Brand, which it acquired in 2017, and curbside pickup.

The company has built much of its business around owned and operated brands. These include broad offerings in the grocery space under the Good & Gather, Market Pantry, and a handful of other brands as well as entries in everything from pretty much every category of apparel to household essentials under the Everspring moniker and celebrity partnerships including Hearth & Hand with Magnolia (with Chip and Joanna Gaines), as well as many others.

Target has also invested in making its stores destinations which it has enhanced with its store-within-a-store partnerships with Starbucks, Disney, CVS, and Ulta Beauty as well as its localized liquor stores. The chain has the ability to be fully omnichannel but it has kept its focus on the in-store experience making its locations not just fun to visit but tweaked to reflect the market they operate in.

A Target in a tourist area, for example, might have snacks, beach supplies, and other touristy items right inside the entrance while one that serves a neighborhood may have groceries upfront. Cornell has also embraced a variety of store formats including much smaller stores. This has given the company the ability to move into cities and near college campuses. That has also helped its ability to fulfill digital orders efficiently in those markets.
