Hi, I’m Matthew Cochrane, lead advisor at 7investing. I’m standing on Las Olas Blvd. in downtown Fort Lauderdale. Near this site the city hosts the annual Las Olas Arts Festival, which has now been running for 33 years, though for obvious reasons the fair might not be held this year.

Decades ago, this event did not launch to huge fanfare, its beginnings were humble. It started as a small block festival, but it now stretches along the Boulevard for miles and includes three weekends throughout the year. As the years went on, every year the fair attracted more festival-goers. As the event’s attendance grew, more artists and sculptors started exhibiting at the fair.

In other words, as more top artists began exhibiting, the crowds grew larger. As the crowds grew larger, more exhibitors would come the next year. This cycle began feeding itself until the Las Olas Arts Festival grew into what it is today, one of the top art festivals in the nation and one of the most anticipated art events in the South Florida area. The Las Olas Arts Fair benefited from this growing network effect, a phenomenon where an increased number of people or participants improves the value of a good or service.
